Food Safety By-Law 678-2006
In June 2006, city Council passed a bylaw requiring food handler certification for food handlers in the food and beverage industry. They bylaw requires that the owner/operator of food establishments ensure that there is, at all times when the establishment is operating, at least one (1) certified food handler working in a supervisory capacity in each area of the premises where food is prepared, processed, served, packaged , or stored. Bylaw 78-2006 came into effect September 1, 2006.
1) Why should I become a Certified Food Handler?
The City of Toronto passed a law effective September 1, 2006 which requires at least one Food Handler on each shift (in a supervisor position) to be certified. Whether you work in a nursing home or restaurant once you are handling food you should seek certification. Increasingly, more and more businesses will require you to be a certified Food Handler before hiring you. Studies show that food safety training equals increased food safety compliance.
2) Who should I take the FoodPrep Food Handler course?
If you are employed or looking of a job in the following industries:
Food Industry: cook, chef, server, caterer, restaurant owner, food service supervisor, cafeteria worker, street vendor, baker hot dog vendor, stock person, kitchen helper.
Health Care Industry: personal support worker (PSW), dietary aide, nurse’s aid, care giver.
Daycare Industry: nanny, early childhood worker, care giver.
We teach you what you NEED to know! We offer the convenience of daytime, evening and weekend courses. The course provides you with invaluable training and tips that will help you pass your certification test. Smaller classroom sizes (20 student maximum) allow for focused learning. After successfully completing the course and the Food Handler certification exam, you can go on to rewarding careers in food and related industries as a Certified Food Handler.
3) How do I get certified ?
The course is one day (approximately 6 hours) which includes the certification exam. Upon successful completion of the Food Handler course and certification exam, FoodPrep students will be issued a certificate from FoodPrep and an ID card from the City of Toronto. The FoodPrep Inc. course is accredited by the City of Toronto and the City of Hamilton. It recognized throughout the GTA.
4) Is the examination difficult?
The exam has a very high success rate. Our experienced and knowledgeable trainers deliver a course that is designed to meet the needs of the adult learner. A practice test and student-friendly environment offer a training environment that promotes optimal learning. Any unsuccessful students are welcome to rewrite their exam free of charge.
