Smart Serve Certification is a training program for individuals who serve alcohol beverages or work where alcohol beverages are served in the province of Ontario. The Smart Serve program is designed for all individuals involved in the sale and service of alcohol beverages.

As of September 1, 2006 according to By-law 678-2006 , Every owner or keeper of an eating or drinking establishment shall ensure that there is, at all times when the establishment is operating, at least one certified food handler working in a supervisory capacity in each area of the premises where food is prepared, processed, served, packaged or stored. Food Handler Certification is also a condition of employment in many food premises.
 
The Ontario Food Premises Regulation (Reg. 562) explains that standards must be followed any where food is prepared for the public. These standards include information on food equipment, food temperatures, safe food storage and display, washrooms, food handling employee hygiene and maintenance and sanitation.
